Draft 2

a.) The rhetorical situation is the equity of a college basketball game.

b.) The exigence is that one call can decide the winner of the game and that call may not be the “right call”.

c.) I would like for that game deciding call to be fair to both teams by allowing the players to make that call themselves and having the official review that call.

d.) The NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct is my rhetorical audience because they are directly involved with getting rules implemented in the NCAA.

reading response to Explaining Genre Theory

1. In the texts it states “Genres are not sortable into precise categories nor are they classification systems” then it goes on to say greeting cards for mother’s day have different responses (cards) available such as sweet, sappy, sentimental, humorous, and so on. The responses sound like different categories to me. How are genres not sortable into precise categories?

2. Something else I don’t understand in the text is when it states “Genres are not only ways users act socially…” How is genre the way we act socially? I also read in the text that “part of what defines a discourse community is the genre system it sanctions and empowers it”, but genre has never been brought up in the past when I was studying discourse.

Inquiry Blog 5/Interview post

1. I interview my cousin Robert Pillow. He plays college basketball.

2. I wanted to interview my cousin so I could get a basketball players perspective on the issue.

3. questions I asked: What is your experience with referees in college basketball? Do you think the referees have too much control over the game? How would you feel if coaches could challenge a call made by a referee? Have you ever lost a game because of a bad call made by a referee? I find a lot of information on basketball players but not a lot onf basketball referees. why do think that is? How did you become interested in college basketball? Are there any resources or references that you would recommend I look into considering my interest? Do you think by allowing coaches to challenge calls it will make the players less likely to get injured? Do you think crowd behavior will affect the calls a referee makes? Is there anything already in college basketball that relates to the rule i want implemented?

I think the interview went well. He answered all my questions and I took my time writing down what he had to say about each question I asked. I gave him the interview over the phone because he goes to a college in Pennsylvania and it seemed like my cousin was very interested in my topic. I learned about how referees decision affect the player in the game. For instance When I asked my cousin what was his experience with college referees, he replied ” referees in college basketball are no different than high school referees. They call a lot of touch fouls but they do not call all the hard fouls.” From my first question alone I learned that some referees allow the teams to get very physical with each other which may lead to injury or violence. So later on in the interview I asked my cousin ” Do you think by allowing coaches to challenge calls it will make the players less likely to get injured?” and he replied “I think so because if the coaches can get the referees to call more fouls that will prevent injury it will keep more vulnerable players to injury playing longer.” The interview helped my inquiry by pointing out the reasons why college basketball may not need the new rule i want implemented but the interview also enforced some of the ideas i had already. One important thing I learned about the COP is that referees calls can psychologically affect basketball players.  Most Basketball players are passionate about the game and if a referee makes a bad call that decides a game, a players may become enraged or may feel some sort of depression and make bad decisions because of one call made by a referee. For example, when my cousin lost a game because of a bad call made by a referee, he said at point he felt like he didn’t even want to play basketball anymore but of course he didn’t stop playing.

reading response to “Rhetorical Situation”

I understand how rhetorical exigencies relate to the essays we are writing. It is important to consider your audience when writing and two questions I have about this reading are:

1. It seems like all problem are resolved through some type of discourse. what would a problem that is not a rhetorical exigencies look like?

2. is it possible for a person to enter a rhetorical situation even if they do not fully understand the situation?
